Soliloquy Assignment

Step One: Find a group of four. If you do not have a group, you will be placed with a group on Thursday.

Step Two
Your group should have assigned you one of the following soliloquies:
Act One, Scene Three (lines 127-147)
Act One, Scene Five (lines 1-28)
Act One, Scene Five (lines 37-56 and 59-69)
Act One, Scene Seven (lines 1-28)

Step Three: Read and understand your sections. You may use the notes in your play as well as other resources and your BRAIN to help you understand the soliloquy.

Step Four: In a proper paragraph, provide a summary of your assigned lines. In a second paragraph discuss the character traits of Lady Macbeth or Macbeth.

Step Five: Consider your characters dominant character trait--what does it remind you of. Pick a powerful symbol that you think could represent the character that you have focused on.
Click here to view an example.

Step Six: Share your findings with your group (on Thursday we will be sharing paragraphs, on Monday we will be sharing images).

Act One, Scene Five (lines 37-56 and 59-69)

The following excerpt occurs after Lady Macbeth has read a letter from her husband- Macbeth. The letter tells of the witches prophesy. During her first soliloquy Lady Macbeth addresses herself. In an attempt to suppress her natural human and compassionate behaviour, she convinces herself to stay true to her goal- murdering King Duncan. She then discusses how she and her husband must act in order to lure King Duncan into trusting their hospitality, so that they could complete their goal.
Lady Macbeth clearly appears to be someone with a strong will for her own desires. She is extremely clever in her plans. She is a character that has a clear conniving attitude, with a gift to deceive. She is someone that cannot be trusted as she feels no remorse for any villainous actions against those that trusted her.

    Step 4/5 Act One, Scene Seven(lines 1-28)

During Macbeth's spew, he is going through all the possible outcomes if he were to kill Duncan. When lady Macbeth comes out to ask him what's wrong, he explains to her that he will not go through with the murder of King Duncan. Lady Macbeth is devistated when she finds out and manages to pursuade him into killing the King by calling him a coward until he murders Duncan. Macbeth agrees but questions the outcome if they fail, Lady Macbeth explains how she will drug his guards, kill Duncan without being caught, then frame he guards. When Macbeth states that the tale won't be believed, she replies by saying, "who wouldn't believe it?" Macbeth eventually gives in and agrees to the murder.

Macbeth is someone who wants to be king so badly, however as his wife tells him, he's not ambitious enough to take the life of someone else's to get what he wants. Mabeth may be a greedy man, but he is terrified at the idea of taking one man's life (an innocent life at that) to get a crown that does not belong to him. He still has a conscience and recognizes that the very idea of killing the king is wretched, however his convincing wife holds it to him to be the murder. Macbeth is trapped and is suffocating under pressure.

Act 1, Scene Five (Lines 37-56 and 59-69)

Throughout the soliloquy in lines 37-56, Lady Macbeth talks to herself regarding her personality and goals. She wishes to remove the compassionate female characteristics and become more like a man. She asks spirits to help her in her murderous acts and make her body and mind hardened to the horrors that she will commit. Then she hopes the night will be dark enough that she will not have to see the blood when she kills King Duncan. When she is speaking to Macbeth in lines 59-69, she reminds him not to be suspicious and instead be kind and inviting, so King Duncan will be unsuspecting and she will kill him.
These soliloquies show Lady Macbeth as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing,” appearing innocent and compassionate on the outside when she welcomes King Duncan, but her thoughts show otherwise. Her thoughts reveal the bloodthirsty, cunning and conniving nature that drives her to kill Duncan. While her female character appears kind, she has an evil thought-process that strives to accomplish the murderous task with immense zeal.

    Summary Act 1 Scene 5 (1-28)

Lady Macbeth receives a letter from her husband Macbeth and reads it to herself and discovers that her husband has had his future foretold. Three witches, through supernatural knowledge predict three things that will happen to Macbeth. Lady Macbeth then sees the problem at hand and realizes that her husband will not have what it takes to complete what the witches have predicted, and that is Macbeth being crowned king. She then finds out the king is on his way to her estate and sees it as the perfect time to strike. Then she speaks out to the spirits, which assist murderers and ask them to thicken her blood so she feels no remorse. Therefore, revealing that she is going to kill the king, because her husband is destined to be the next king according to the three witches.

    Character Traits of Lady Macbeth

Lady Macbeth is portrayed as being very ambitious and deceptive through her thoughts in this scene. She is very un-characteristic as a wife at the time as she is looking to take full control of her husband’s foreseeable future. Women at the time were not seen as equal, and even their husbands wouldn’t regard them as so and so this is already showing us a difference in her character. She completely, without hesitation believes the witches and thinks about the situation very ambitiously, making her character stand out. Then she also comes across as being deceptive as she “prays” in a sense to the spirits, asking that she will be changed and made able to kill and go through with the plan without being suspected as the murderer.

    Summary Act 1 Scene 5 (lines 37-56 and 59-69)

These lines go over Lady Macbeth’s personal thoughts and opinions on Macbeth becoming king and the King and Macbeth’s entrance to the castle with the King. In Lady Macbeth’s soliloquy, she talks about how she wants to be filled with blinding bloodlust so she can murder Duncan. Then Macbeth and Lady Macbeth go on to plot the murder together with Lady Macbeth leading the charge, she doesn’t believe Macbeth to be cruel enough to do such a deed.

    Character Traits of Lady Macbeth

Lady Macbeth is a women wit great emotional strength. She knows herself and her capabilities and has the drive to get what she wants done extremely quickly and efficiently. She wants very deeply to have the willpower to be able to murder without any hesitation and it sounds as if she could easily achieve this goal in the near future.

  10. The summary of Act One, Scene Five (lines 37-56 and 59-69):
In this soliloquy, Lady Macbeth is calling on spirits to make her less feminine so she will be able to be satisfied with thinking about murdering Duncan. She asks them to make her strong so that she does not feel any compassion towards the fact that she is killing someone. Then Macbeth arrives telling her that Duncan is going to stay with them and she tried to convince him to kill Duncan but she starts to think he isn't mean enough to do the task. She continues to try to convince him to kill Duncan.

Macbeth seems sort of timid. He is scared to murder Duncan and we see him trying to convince himself it's the right thing when in his heart he knows that it is wrong. When Lady Macbeth proposes the idea of murder to Macbeth, he begins to be filled with worry. He thinks its wrong because he is supposed to be protecting Duncan, considering he is his guest. Instead, he is convinced to murder him to gain his title.

    Act 1 Scene 7 Lines 1-28
In this soliloquy, Macbeth is thinking about the reasons which would stop him from killing Duncan. I don’t think Macbeth really wants to kill Duncan, but he is persuaded by his wife. Macbeth lists three reasons why he shouldn’t kill Duncan: Macbeth is Duncan’s kinsman and subject. Macbeth is hosting Duncan at his house, as his host he should protect Duncan, rather than kill him. Duncan was a humble leader and free from corruption. If Duncan were to be murdered many people would be deeply upset. The only thing pushing Macbeth towards murder was ambition.

The character i made a glog for is Macbeth. He is working in the shadow of Lady Macbeths plans. He is driven to kill because of his wife's instruction, and ridicule. Macbeth now has the blood on his hands (more figuratively) from killing an innocent king. The murder is a tangled mess of plotting, killing, and deceiving, and Macbeth is caught in the middle of it all.

Summary of Act One, Scene Five (lines 37-56 and 59-69)

Through this soliloquy, Lady Macbeth is working herself into a killer's state of mind. She desires the killer's spirit and tries to get rid of her womanliness. She comes up with the idea of murdering Duncan when he comes to their castle. Hating of Macbeth's human kindness, Lady Macbeth tries to incite him to be ambitious and evil to be the king of Scotland.

Lady Macbeth: Lady Macbeth is portrayed asa a woman with diabolical nature and ambition. She is the only one who convinces Macbeth to murder Duncan to fulfil their ambitions. Her soliloquy indicates that she is a manipulative person who is the dominant one in her relationship with Macbeth. She is lack of humanity and calls the evil side of her to take away her feminine instinct.

    Act One, Scene 7(lines 28-81):
Macbeth was struggling with whether he should kill King Duncan or not. There is none of a reasonable reason to kill him: First, Duncan is his cousin, second, Macbeth is his host, and third, he had a virtuous nature. Lady Macbeth entered the room. She blamed he is a coward that doesn’t have brave to do that. For their future and reputation, it’s worthy. Lady Macbeth suggested that makes King Duncan’s guards drunk to get a chance to kill him while he is sleeping. Macbeth finally accepted it.

Macbeth faced a dilemma between himself and Lady Macbeth. He thinks this is an unmoral thing to murder King Duncan. People love him and respect him. But his wife thought he should throw out the compassionate to get their benefits which are authorization and money. His mind finally lean to the material and lost his morality.

Act One, Scene Three (lines 127-147)

In this portion of text we see that Macbeth is realizing that two of the witch's predictions have come true. So now he is considering the fact that maybe the third one is true and maybe he is supposed to be king. In this text he is wrestling with the thought of how he will become king. He doesn’t really know where he stands because Lady Macbeth has a lot of power over him. He doesn’t know what he want to do, he knows that if he wants to be king than he will have to kill King Duncan and he is not sure if he is prepared to go to sure drastic measures.

The character traits that I see in Macbeth throughout this portion of text is power-hungry and selfishness. He is so caught up in his desires that he has considered killing another human for his own glory. I also see that he is trying to make it work but it is obviously not working. Its like a jacket that doesn’t fit but you where it anyways because you really like it, but the truth is its not the right size. Macbeth is trying to get all of this power when its clear that its not his and that it is not right for him.
